# Capture widget

> A small panel that opens over any app, so you can save a note, quote, link, files, a voice note or a screenshot without switching windows.

## Open it and save

1. Press `⌘⇧C` in any app, or choose **New capture** in the menu bar icon's menu.
2. Pick a tile: **Note**, **Quote**, **Link**, **Media**, **Voice** or **Screenshot**. Press its letter, or move with the arrow keys and press `Return`.
3. Fill in the step, then press `⌘⏎` or click the round checkmark to save.
4. The widget turns into a receipt where you can file what you saved. See [After you save](https://resurf.so/guides/receipt).

## Picker keys

- `N` Note, `Q` Quote, `L` Link, `M` Media, `V` Voice, `S` Screenshot.
- `C` picks a color from the screen. Color has no tile.
- `F` opens **Search**, and `O` opens the main window.
- `⌘[` goes back to the picker from a step. `Esc` goes back one level, and in the picker it closes the widget.

`Esc` inside a step keeps your draft while the widget is open. Closing the widget throws away a new note, quote or link you haven't saved.

## From the main window

1. Press `⌘N`, or click the plus button (**Create capture**) in the sidebar header.
2. Pick **Note**, **Quote**, **Link**, **Media** or **Record**, or press `N`, `Q`, `L`, `M` or `R`.
3. **Note** opens a **New note** editor in the window. Press `⌘⏎` to save, or `Esc` to close.
4. **Quote**, **Link** and **Media** open the widget at that step, with the space you're browsing already chosen. **Record** starts a voice note.

## Shortcuts and the menu bar

Change `⌘⇧C` in **Settings → Shortcuts → Global capture**. The same group has **Quick note**, **Quick link**, **Quick media** and **Quick voice**, which are unset at first. Each opens the widget straight at its step, and Quick voice starts recording.

The menu bar icon's menu has **New capture**, **Screenshot**, **Note**, **Link**, **Media**, **Voice** and **Color**.

Closing the main window leaves the widget and shortcuts working. `⌘Q` quits Resurf completely, menu bar icon and shortcuts included.

## Questions

### Does the widget work when the main window is closed?

Yes. Closing the last window leaves Resurf running in the menu bar. ⌘Q quits it completely, and then the shortcuts stop too.

### Why doesn't ⌘N open the widget?

In the main window, ⌘N opens Create capture. The widget's shortcut is ⌘⇧C.

### Where is Color?

Press C in the picker, or choose Color in the menu bar icon's menu. It has no tile.
