# The menu bar

> Resurf keeps an icon in the Mac menu bar, so you can capture and search with the window closed.

- Page: https://resurf.so/guides/menu-bar
- Section: Get started
- Works on: Mac
- Last checked against the app: 2026-10-17
- Open: Resurf icon in the menu bar
- Quit: `⌘Q`

## What's in the menu

Click the Resurf icon in the menu bar. The menu has:

- **New capture**, and a row for each type: **Screenshot**, **Note**, **Link**, **Media**, **Voice**, **Color**.
- **Open app** and **Search**.
- **Roadmap** and **Contact support**.
- **Settings** and **Quit Resurf**.

You can also drag text, links, images or files onto the icon to save them.

## Close or quit

Closing the window, with the red button or `⌘W`, only hides it. Resurf keeps running in the menu bar, and its shortcuts, capture widget and Quick Search keep working. Choose **Open app** to bring the window back.

`⌘Q`, or **Quit Resurf**, quits fully: the global shortcuts stop and the icon goes away.

## Inbox count

The number beside the icon is how many captures are in the Inbox. Later isn't counted, and an empty Inbox shows nothing.

Change it in **Settings → General → Inbox badge**: **Menu bar** is on by default, and **Dock icon** adds the count to the Dock. macOS asks you to allow badges the first time you turn that on.

## Start at login

**Start at login** is in **Settings → General → Startup & sounds**, and it's turned on when you finish setup. Resurf then starts in the menu bar with no window and no Dock icon. Choose **Open app** from the menu bar icon to bring them back.

## Questions

### How do I quit Resurf completely?

Press ⌘Q, or choose Quit Resurf. Closing the window doesn't quit.

### Resurf opened with no window after I logged in.

That's Start at login. Click the menu bar icon and choose Open app, or turn the switch off in Settings → General.

### The Dock badge doesn't show.

Turn on Dock icon in Settings → General → Inbox badge, and allow badges when macOS asks. If you turned them down, use Open Settings on the Allow badges row there.
