# Voice notes

> Record a voice note and Resurf writes the transcript, on your device unless you choose Cloud.

## Record

On Mac:

1. Press `⌘⇧C`, then `V`, or choose **Voice** in the menu bar icon's menu. Recording starts at once.
2. Pause and resume with the pause button.
3. Press `⌘⏎` or click the checkmark to save. The X discards the recording.

On iPhone and iPad:

1. Tap the plus button, then **Voice note**. Or tap **Voice** on the widget, or ask Siri: “Record a voice note in Resurf”.
2. Pause or resume as you go.
3. Tap the checkmark (**Stop and save**).
4. Swipe the sheet down to keep recording while you do something else. Tap the banner or the Live Activity to come back.

On Mac, closing the widget while recording discards the recording without asking. Save with `⌘⏎` first.

## The transcript

After you save, the transcript is made automatically. A voice note has two tabs, **Transcript** and **Notes**.

- With AI features on, it gets a short title and a cleaned-up transcript, which replaces the raw one.
- Without AI, the title is the transcript's first words.
- **Generate notes** writes **Clean up**, **Format** or **Meeting notes** into the Notes tab. It needs AI.

**Auto title** and **Clean up transcript** can be turned off only on iPhone and iPad, in Settings → Voice with AI features on. The choice syncs to your Mac.

## On-device or Cloud

Choose how transcription runs in **Settings → Voice → Transcribe with**:

- **On-device**, the default: the audio stays on your device. On Mac, pick a **Model**; one you haven't downloaded shows **Download**.
- **Cloud**: the audio is sent to OpenAI. It needs OpenAI connected, and choosing it turns AI features on. On iPhone and iPad, Cloud shows only when AI features are on.

**Language** is Auto detect by default, or pick English, Spanish, French, German or Hindi.

Turning AI features off, or disconnecting OpenAI, moves transcription back on-device.

## Questions

### Does my audio leave my device?

Not with On-device, the default. With Cloud, the audio is sent to OpenAI.

### How long can a recording be?

Up to 60 minutes on iPhone and iPad; the recording saves itself at the limit. The Mac has no limit, but Cloud transcription can't take recordings over 25 MB.

### Where is the raw transcript?

When a cleaned transcript exists, it replaces the raw one, and the voice note shows only the cleaned text.
