Raindrop.io is hard to beat as a bookmark manager

Raindrop.io has had years to refine the job of saving and organizing links. It works in the browser, on mobile, on desktop and on the web. Its free plan is large enough for many people to use without paying.

Collections can be nested. Tags and filters handle larger libraries. You can highlight saved pages, read PDFs and EPUBs, share a collection with other people, or publish it as a public page. A public API, integrations and MCP support make it easier to connect the library to other tools.

Pro adds full-text search, permanent copies, automatic backups, reminders and Stella. Stella can search by meaning, answer with sources, summarize material and help organize the library after confirmation.

If the job is “keep my bookmarks available everywhere,” Raindrop.io is the stronger product.

Resurf starts where bookmarks stop

Many things worth keeping are not bookmarks. They are screenshots from a call, a voice thought recorded outside, a marked-up PDF, a color, a local file, or a note that never had a URL.

Resurf stores those things in the same capture model. Links still get article text, metadata and a visual preview, but they do not define the whole library. Voice recordings keep the original audio and transcript. Images and screenshots can be found by words detected inside them. PDFs, notes, comments and saved article text feed the same local search.

This makes Resurf a better fit for research, design references and personal work that moves between the web and your own files.

Search goes deeper in different places

Raindrop.io has stronger meaning-based retrieval today. Stella can answer questions over saved material and Pro search covers page content, PDFs, EPUBs and supported YouTube transcripts.

Resurf searches a broader mix of personal content locally. That includes article text, PDF text, image and screenshot OCR, voice transcripts, comments, highlight quotes, tags, Spaces, file names, domains and URLs. It also supports color search.

Resurf does not yet ship semantic search. If you need to search by concept when none of the same words appear in the source, Raindrop Pro is ahead. If the useful clue is inside a screenshot, recording or local file, Resurf may have more of the source material indexed.

Semantic retrieval is in development for Resurf. It is not counted as available in this comparison.

Ownership is more than an export button

Raindrop.io has a solid portability story for a hosted service. It can export bookmarks and highlights, download uploaded files, and create automatic account backups on Pro. The working library still lives in a Raindrop account and syncs through Raindrop's infrastructure.

Resurf's working library lives on your device. On Mac, the vault contains ordinary capture folders, original assets, Markdown notes and readable metadata. You can keep it on one device or sync through your private iCloud database. The search index is a disposable cache that can be rebuilt from the vault.

No Resurf content account is required. Resurf's servers do not host the capture library. Optional OpenAI features use your own key and send the material needed for the request directly to OpenAI.

Both products provide privacy controls. The architectural choice is different: a managed account with broad access, or a personal library held on your own devices.

Collaboration changes the answer

Raindrop.io supports shared collections, member roles, invite links and public pages. Its free plan includes collaboration. This is useful for a research team, a shared inspiration board, a client collection or a public reading list.

Resurf is a personal product. It has no shared Spaces, public pages or team roles. Private ownership is central to the design, but it does not replace collaboration.

If other people need to work inside the same collection, choose Raindrop.io.

• Managed semantic search without an API key

Where Resurf is the better choice

Pick Resurf if you want:

• A local library on Mac, iPhone and iPad
• Original files and readable Markdown in the working vault
• Device-only use or private iCloud sync
• Notes, voice, screenshots, PDFs, images, audio, video and arbitrary files beside links
• OCR search across images and screenshots
• Searchable voice transcripts with an on-device transcription option
• Whole captures returning through the Resurface widget
• A one-time Mac purchase

Moving from Raindrop.io

Raindrop.io can export bookmarks in common formats, but Resurf does not yet have a one-click Raindrop importer. A large move still needs a tested migration path before you leave the source account.

For now, try Resurf with new material or a small sample. Keep the Raindrop export untouched until you have confirmed that titles, URLs, notes, tags and original files arrived as expected.
