Eagle is a desktop asset manager for designers, built to browse and tag tens of thousands of images, videos, fonts and source files fast. Resurf is a personal context library for notes, links, screenshots, voice, PDFs and files on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Both pay once and keep the library on your own disk, so the choice comes down to what you are saving.
We make Resurf. Everything here comes from Eagle's own pages, we say where Eagle is ahead, and planned Resurf features don't count.
It previews 115 formats including PSD, AI, Sketch, Figma exports, 3D models, fonts and RAW, searches by color and shape, finds duplicates, batch-renames, and runs on Windows as well as Mac. Its browser extension batch-saves every image on a page. One $34.95 license covers two devices for life.
Notes, links, screenshots, voice, PDFs, images and files sit in one local vault, searched by the text inside them. It syncs through your private iCloud, runs on iPhone and iPad, and brings old captures back on its own.

Drop in a folder of references, source files, fonts and video, and Eagle previews nearly all of it in place: 115 formats, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, Affinity, Cinema 4D, 3D models, RAW photos and web fonts.
That breadth is the point. A designer's collection is not only JPEGs, and Eagle lets you browse a PSD or an OBJ without opening the app that made it. Around the previews it offers hierarchical folders, smart folders, tag groups, star ratings, image comments, batch rename, duplicate scanning and Actions that apply a set of organization rules in one go.
Search follows the same instinct. Beyond keywords, Eagle filters by color, shape, dimensions, type, rating, date and even the BPM of audio files, and its reverse image search finds assets that look like one you point at. The browser extension saves every image on a page in one click, downloads the high-resolution original, captures a full page, and pulls in whole Pinterest boards.
If your library is thousands of images and assets that you need to flick through quickly, Eagle is the more mature tool for it, and Resurf does not try to match its preview or color-search depth.
A capture in Resurf is as likely to be a note, a saved article, a voice memo or a PDF as an image, and all of them are searched by the words inside them.
Eagle's keyword search covers the name, folder, extension, tag, URL, comment and note of an asset. It does not read the text inside a PDF or a screenshot; Eagle's own help points to a Copy Image Text plugin for that, which uploads the image to Google for recognition. Resurf indexes saved article text, PDF text, words found in images and screenshots, voice transcripts, notes, comments, tags, Spaces, URLs and file metadata, all on the device.
The reading side differs too. An Eagle bookmark stores only the URL and opens the live page in a preview. Resurf keeps a reader copy of the article, lets you highlight and comment on it, and stores Markdown notes and quotes as captures in their own right. Voice notes are transcribed on the device.
On Mac, Resurf also finds things when the words are gone. Search by meaning finds a capture by what it is about, and Similar captures shows what looks or reads like the one open. Both are a Beta that runs on your Mac, offline. Older captures come back through the Resurface widget and Shuffle, so the library keeps working for you after the day you saved something.
If the material is mostly images, Eagle browses them better. If it is a mix of notes, pages, recordings, documents and images that belong to the same piece of work, Resurf keeps that mix together.
This is where the two agree. Neither runs a content cloud, neither needs an account to hold your files, and both can be backed up by copying a folder.
Eagle's library is a folder on your own drive, and its privacy policy says that all content of the app database is saved on your local hard drive. Sync is yours to arrange: Eagle's help suggests placing the library folder in Dropbox or Google Drive, or carrying it on a USB drive, and the same trick with a shared folder or a NAS is how teams share a library. There is no built-in sync, and no mobile client to sync to.
Resurf's Mac library is also ordinary files, with original assets, Markdown notes and readable metadata in one vault, and the search index can be rebuilt from it. Sync is built in through your private iCloud database, which is how the iPhone and iPad apps see the same library, and you can turn it off and keep everything on one device. No Resurf content account exists, and Resurf's servers do not host the library.
AI is optional on both. Eagle's AI Search runs on your machine, and its AI Models hub takes your own key for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek or Qwen, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio. Resurf's AI features are off until you connect a provider with your own key or run Ollama on your Mac, and the meaning and similarity models run on the device.
Eagle 4 added its AI as plugins from the Plugin Center this year, and they are capable. Resurf's equivalents are part of the app.
Eagle's AI Search plugin does reverse image search and natural-language search over the text already attached to an asset, with everything processed locally and GPU acceleration on Apple silicon. AI Action runs bulk rename, description, folder and tag jobs with a model you pick. Eagle Skill and MCP let Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor create folders, fix tags and categorize in bulk, with a plan you confirm before it runs.
Resurf's Search by meaning and Similar captures are a Beta built into the Mac app. Ask your library answers questions from your captures, and AI suggestions propose titles, tags and Spaces. Through MCP or the command line, Claude, Codex and Cursor can search and read the library, and you decide whether an agent may also change it.
The honest difference is in scope. Eagle's agents organize assets. Resurf's agents read context: the notes, pages, transcripts and documents you saved, so an agent working on your project can use what you already know.
Eagle runs on Mac and Windows and has no mobile app. Resurf runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad and has no Windows app.
Eagle's help says the team is focused on the desktop version and does not have the resources for mobile in the near term. Its V5 development update describes an architecture that could eventually serve more devices, but there is no release date and the post does not promise mobile for the first release. If you need your library on Windows, Eagle is the only one of the two that works.
Resurf is Apple-only by design. The free iPhone and iPad apps capture from the share sheet, Shortcuts, widgets and Control Center, record voice notes, and browse the same library the Mac holds. If you save things from your phone as often as from your desk, that matters more than any feature table.
Eagle is $34.95 for one license key that activates two devices on Mac or Windows, with free updates for every future version. Resurf is $39 one time with two years of updates, or $79 for lifetime updates.
Eagle has no free tier, only a 30-day full-feature trial, and offers 30% off to students and teachers. Extra device seats are sold separately, and you can unbind a device and move the key as often as you like.
Resurf's Mac app is free for the first 50 captures and 4 Spaces, and the iPhone and iPad apps are free and unlimited. Across one Mac and a phone, the free tiers alone tell you whether the model fits before you pay anything. Check both live pricing pages, because promotions and terms change.
There is no one-click Eagle importer in Resurf yet. Export the images you want from Eagle to a folder and drag the folder onto Resurf; each file becomes a capture.
Eagle's folders, tags and notes stay behind in that move, so keep the Eagle library intact while you test. The moving guide covers what each way in keeps. Many people run both: Eagle for the asset collection, Resurf for the notes, pages and recordings around a project.
For some libraries. If you want a local, pay-once library for notes, links, screenshots, voice, PDFs and files on Mac, iPhone and iPad, Resurf fits. If you are managing a large collection of design assets with source-file previews and color search, Eagle remains the better tool.
Eagle, for the asset collection itself. It previews 115 formats including PSD, AI, Sketch and 3D files, searches by color and shape, and finds duplicates. Resurf is better for the research, notes, saved pages and recordings around the design work.
No. Eagle runs on macOS and Windows, and its help says a mobile version is not planned for the near term. Resurf has free iPhone and iPad apps that share the Mac library through private iCloud.
Eagle does, and one license covers two devices on Mac or Windows. Resurf is Mac, iPhone and iPad only, with no Windows app planned.
Both keep the library on your own disk and neither hosts your files. Eagle's AI Search runs locally and its AI Models hub supports local models; its Copy Image Text plugin uploads images to Google. Resurf's OCR, transcription, meaning search and similarity run on the device, and its optional AI uses your own provider key or Ollama.
Not in its built-in search, which covers names, folders, tags, URLs, comments and notes. A plugin extracts text from an image on request by uploading it to Google. Resurf indexes OCR from screenshots and images, PDF text, article text and voice transcripts automatically, on the device.
No. Eagle is a one-time $34.95 purchase for two devices with free lifetime updates, after a 30-day trial. Resurf is also pay-once: $39 with two years of updates or $79 for lifetime updates, with a free tier on Mac and free iPhone and iPad apps.
Resurf stores any file and opens it in its own app, but it does not render design source files in place the way Eagle does. Its previews cover images, PDFs, video, audio, notes and saved pages.
Partly. Export the images you want to a folder and drag it onto Resurf, and each file becomes a capture. Eagle's folders, tags and notes do not come across yet, so keep the Eagle library while you test.
