With it off, Check now in the same place still works.

Automatic updates
Resurf downloads updates quietly and installs them when it fully quits, or when you choose to restart. This is Automatic updates in Settings → General → Updates, and it's on by default.
Update now
Choose Check for Updates… in the Resurf menu.
If there's an update, a card at the bottom left of the window says so. Click Update.
When the card says the update is ready, click Restart to update. Or keep working: it installs when you quit Resurf with ⌘Q.
Check now in Settings shows its progress in that row instead of the card.
See what's new
Open the workspace menu at the bottom of the sidebar and choose What's new. When a release you haven't seen arrives, a What's new button with a dot also shows at the foot of the sidebar.
It shows the latest release, with each change marked New, Improved or Fixed. Open full changelog shows earlier releases.
